On August 20th, the highly anticipated Chinese AAA game Black Myth: Wukong officially launched on both PC and PS5 platforms. Black Myth: Wukong release date has been eagerly awaited by fans, and the game quickly ascended to the top of the Steam sales charts, dominating the week of August 6th to August 13th. The PS5 version of the game utilizes the console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and advanced DualSense controller technology, providing fast load times and an immersive combat experience.

PS5 Game Modes

The game offers three distinct modes on the PS5:

  1. Performance Mode: Dynamic 1080P at 60FPS, achieved through frame generation that forcibly boosts 30FPS to 60FPS.
  2. Balanced Mode: Dynamic 1080P at 45FPS.
  3. Quality Mode: Dynamic 1440P at 30FPS.

Both Performance and Balanced modes upscale to “4K” resolution, but Performance Mode has a unique approach to frame rates that can impact gameplay.

Performance Issues and Player Feedback

While the game has received praise for its visuals and storytelling, several performance issues have been noted by players:

  • Frame Rate Drops: From the mid-point of Chapter 3, especially during boss fights, frame rate drops become common. The snowy terrain and frequent use of lightning effects during boss battles contribute to this issue, making frame drops a regular occurrence.
  • Input Lag: Players have reported a slight delay in command inputs, such as rolling or consuming potions. This delay, which occurs in Performance Mode due to frame generation, makes dodging attacks less responsive and can lead to frustrating gameplay experiences. Switching to Balanced or Quality Mode can alleviate this issue to some extent.
  • Controller Adaptation: At launch, the PS5 controller had minimal vibration and no adaptive trigger support. This issue extended to third-party controllers on the PC version, where vibration feedback was very light. Although the PS5 version received a 1.08 patch that added vibration feedback for heavy attacks, spells, transformations, and hits, the intensity of the feedback remains weaker compared to other PS5 games. Additionally, the activation of the “Transformation Skill” requires simultaneous pressing of both trigger buttons (right and left). Many players have found this challenging, leading to frequent failures in triggering the skill, particularly on the PS5 platform.

Visual Quality and Optimization

Despite these issues, the game’s visual quality has been well-received. The graphics are stunning, with realistic lighting and detailed environments. However, there is room for improvement in optimization:

  • Remove Sharpening Effect in Performance Mode: Adding an option to toggle frame generation features.
  • Enhance HDR Effects: Across all modes for a more immersive visual experience.

Conclusion

Black Myth: Wukong marks a significant milestone in Chinese AAA gaming, offering a blend of traditional mythology and modern technology. While the game excels in visual storytelling and immersive environments, there are areas for improvement in performance and controller adaptation. As updates continue to roll out, players can expect a more refined gaming experience on the Black Myth: Wukong PS5 platform.
