Players can access this area at any point, but to challenge the trial, they must first obtain the Chimeral Imbued Ultimatum, an item dropped by the area’s boss, Xyclucian the Chimera. Once acquired, the Ultimatum allows players to enter and exit the Trial of Chaos but only until its completion. Should you wish to reattempt the trial later, you’ll need to find another Ultimatum through random drops.
The Trial of Chaos is designed to test players with a variety of objectives. These can range from eliminating all enemies in the area to escorting statues or retrieving Soul Cores. Each encounter is swarmed with monsters, but the true challenge lies in the afflictions.
Afflictions are negative modifiers that make each encounter more difficult. Some are relatively mild, like increased monster resistances or environmental hazards in each room. However, others are far more punishing, such as enemies always dealing critical damage or hazards that can slow, stun, or petrify. If you find yourself struggling to clear enemies, consider farming for better gear before attempting the trial again.
At the start of each round, players choose one of three possible afflictions before entering the first combat room. Once you can comfortably defeat the monsters within the trial, consider farming for gear and XP by intentionally dying after collecting loot. When selecting afflictions, avoid those that limit your movement and activity choices. Instead, opt for afflictions that increase the spawn of rare enemies, as they often yield better loot.
Upon successfully completing the Trial of Chaos, you’ll receive all the loot displayed by the Trial Master before each room, along with any additional loot obtained from enemies. If it’s your first completion of the trial, you’ll also earn two additional ascension points for your ascension class in PoE2. It’s important to note that ascension point rewards are only granted after the first trial completion—subsequent trials will only provide loot.
